It is a fear and hatred for mathematics. Every one of us have MATH PHOBIA; either we don ’t realize it or don’t accept it. Math phobia sets in at an early age due to |
Maruthi Math Lab is designed to remove the anxiety caused by learning mathematics through rote memory and help children to enjoy mathematics. That ‘s a promise! |
Proposal for Setting up Math Lab
The core objectives of Math Lab are:
1. Removing math phobia in Students and making Math learning meaningful and enjoyable through hands on learning experiences.
2. Identify Math talent in young Students and mentor them
Mathematics as a subject is indispensable in the development of any nation with respect to science and technology. MATHEMATICS teaching in today’s school is text book dominated, concerned primarily with the manipulation of symbols and, all too often, largely removed from the real world of the child. Mathematics enjoys a reputation, which is clearly less then inspiring. Unfortunately math has a reputation as being hard to understand, and kids tend to decide at an early age that they are not good at it. One of math's strong points is that it is very logical, and can be understood if the right methods are used to teach it. Mathematics being a compulsory subject of study, access to quality mathematics education is every child's right. On the other hand, mathematics education in our schools is beset with problems. Due to the hierarchy of concepts and largely deductive and abstract nature of the subject, mathematics is considered as a very dull and difficult subject. A phobia is created in the minds of the children that mathematics is tough to learn. As a result, most of the students are not taking interest in the subject and it has become one of the main causes of student's failure in mathematics. The main aim of the mathematics laboratory is to initiate children to enjoy mathematics, pose and solve meaningful problems, to use abstraction to perceive relationships and structure and to understand the basic structure of mathematics.
Problems and Weakness in the teaching of present day Math.
Math is taught as an abstract subject. Applications of math concepts are not told. Too much time is spent on monotonous drill. The goal has shifted from understanding to passing examination. Confusion between mathematical proficiency and Arithmetic proficiency. Geometrical and physical visualization are weak. Students are passive learners. Students are not encouraged to talk mathematically
Strategies for Increasing Student Motivation in Math
Concrete and hands on experience through use of manipulative. Get students actively involved in justifying mathematical curiosities. Call attention to a void in students' knowledge. Make math material as a study of pattern. Present a problem as challenge. Indicate the usefulness of a topic. Use recreational mathematics.
What is a Math Lab?
A ‘Math Lab’ in a school is a place where: Students do experiment and activities with numbers and shapes and try to generalize patterns. Students learn to estimate. Students make models in class. Students work independently in groups under the guidance of the teacher. Students are active all the time and are involved in what they are doing. Creativity of students is allowed through free play. Students are free to discuss amongst themselves and with the teacher. Concepts and theorem are not given they arise out of their investigation. There is interface between the various branches of Math. Students are encouraged to find alternate methods to solve a problem Students enjoy learning mathematics.
How the Math lab will be helpful?
It develops physical involvement in order to add new ideas to their cognitive structure. It emphasis on learning by doing. It provides children with opportunities to discover and understand mathematical concept through their active involvemennt isolving problems. It makes children to think, to look for patterns and ask questions. It develops an attitude of inquiry. Teacher adorns the role of facilitator of learning thereby avoiding intimidation.
Benefits of Math lab:
Visualization of otherwise abstract math concepts. Collaborative learning takes place. Recording observations in the worksheets develops observational skills. Drawing inferences from tabulated results enhances systematic learning process. Group activity develops discipline and incorporates a culture whereby students wait for their turn. Interaction among students develops soft skills. Leadership quality develops. The Mathematics Laboratory is a place, rich in manipulative material, to which children have ready access to handle them, perform mathematical experiments, play mathematical games, solve mathematical puzzles and become involved in other activities. An integral part of the mathematics laboratory is the manipulation of objects. Through manipulating concrete material, the child is better able to bridge the gap between the real and the abstract world. Activities done at a math lab, is also a process and a procedure for teaching and learning mathematics. The laboratory approach allows pupils to set up mathematical experiments for the purpose of discovering some mathematical principle, pattern, or process. Even teachers can be a part of the process, group discussions, and individual projects. A mathematics laboratory is activity-centered; the child is placed in problem solving situation and through self-exploration and discovery, he or she provides a solution based on his or her experience, needs, and interests.
